Mokka is a 7 year old, slightly overweight, American Pit Bull Terrier-Well not overweight anymore.
Mokka was diagnosed with ACL tears in both knees in November 09. The emergency vet recommended immediate surgery for treatment. I took her to my
vet and got the same diagnoses and suggestion of treatment. I decided to look online for more information as there were several types of surgery options and I wanted what was best. While online I discovered Orthotics as an alternate and sometimes complimentary to surgery. I decided to go with rest and orthotics as a primary treatment and also discovered Jeff.
Jeff built a dual stifle orthotic and Mokka started wearing it in December. She started to show signs of immediate improvement as previously she needed assistance to go outside. In a few days she was outside on here own and after about 2 months of her wearing the brace around the house she started to go on limited walks with it and we gradually increased her activity level, always watching for signs of limping or pain. Mokka was back up to her old high activity level in about 3 months and completely off the Orthotics by July 2010. Her activity level is much higher now as we live on a farm instead of the city and she is doing great. No sign of a limp or arthritis.
This was a great turnaround for her and she has done extremely well with this course of treatment. I highly suggest if you have a dog with this type of injury that you give this consideration. Mokka got excellent results and it was far less invasive than surgery.
